JEI Menu
JEI Menu is a Prologue quest about the recipe viewer on the right side of the inventory screen. Left-clicking an item there shows how it is made, and right-clicking it shows what it is used in. The quest opens three more Prologue quests: Upgrading Gear, Questing and New Quest UI.

JEI Menu (Prologue)
The JEI menu is on the Right side of the inventory menu, with a search bar for it below the player inventory.
JEI will help you navigate through the vast amounts of blocks and items, simply Left Click on an item to view the crafting recipe (if any), and Right Click to view what the item can be used to craft.
In the individual item menu you can also see what mobs drop the given item, and what other mechanics will craft such item.

Upgrading Gear#
Upgrading Gear (“Upgrading gear made easy.”) follows JEI Menu. Its task is to have a Crafting Table in the inventory, and it gives no reward. Its text explains that gear upgrades keep their gems, enchantments and affixes:

Some simpler recipes use smithing tables for upgrading gear. Others use crafting tables. Do not fear! Your gems, enchantments, affixes, and so forth will not be deleted and will instead carry onto the crafted gear!
